Position Description

Contributes to the university's mission through teaching in an area of expertise, mentoring students in professional and career preparation and serving as liaison with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program. This is a non-tenure track, multi-year renewable appointment contingent on successful annual and cumulative performance appraisals as well as a majority affirmative vote of the academic unit. Summer appointments possible, but not guaranteed, contingent on demand for courses and availability of funding. The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering (CECE) in the Whitacre College of Engineering at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, Assistant Professor of Practice to begin in the Spring 2025 semester.

About the Department

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering (CECE) in the Whitacre College of Engineering at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, Assistant Professor of Practice to begin in the Spring 2025 semester. Candidates with expertise in construction engineering are of particular interest; however, outstanding candidates in any area of civil engineering are welcome to apply.

The CECE Department is home to 31 tenure-track/tenured and research faculty, including two National Academy of Engineering (NAE) members. Nearly 25 percent of the faculty are women and minorities.

Seven new faculty have been hired in the last three years. Department faculty’s research activity spans regional, national and international research, with active sponsored research valued approximately at 11 million dollars per year. Citations of faculty’s published work have doubled in the same period, with a majority of faculty publications occurring with supervised students as lead authors in Tier-1 journals. The department awards bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering (BSCE) and in construction engineering (BSConE), master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering, as well as a five-year professional Master of Environmental Engineering (MEnvE) degree. In the 2023-2024 year, the department enrolled over 350 undergraduate and over 150 graduate students. Department faculty advised 166 undergraduate degrees, 42 Master’s degrees and 10 PhD degrees to completion in 2022-2023.

Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the title of Professor of Practice is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practice. Primary responsibilities normally will be to teach in an area of expertise, mentor students in professional and career preparation, and liaise with professional contacts and entities on behalf of the department or program.

In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within an individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Responsibilities include:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in construction engineering, with a focus on imparting practical knowledge and industry insights.
• Mentor and advise students, providing guidance on academic and career development.
• Develop and maintain relationships with industry partners to facilitate experiential learning opportunities for students.
• Engage in scholarly activities and professional development to stay abreast of industry trends and best practices.
• Contribute to the academic and administrative functions of the department and institution.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold at least a master’s degree in construction engineering or civil engineering or any other related fields of engineering at the time of appointment and have at least five years of industrial experience, particularly in the field of construction engineering. In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with professional engineering license are highly encouraged to apply.
