ASEE Fellow Member

The Board of Directors confers the grade of Fellow Member to recognize outstanding contributions to engineering education or engineering technology education and considerable individual contributions to ASEE. (The Committee construes the scope of engineering education and engineering technology education to include the many and varied activities that make up the programs of ASEE.) The candidate shall hold active membership at the time of nomination and shall have been a member for a period of ten years or more preceding July 1 of the year of election. To confirm a potential nominee's join date, go to the ASEE’s membership directory.

The grade of Fellow Member is an honor, which an individual cannot seek. Rather, another active member must initiate the nomination. A member can nominate only one individual each year. The grade of Fellow Member cannot be conferred upon a current member of the ASEE Awards Policy Committee. Nominees approved by the Awards Policy Committee for Fellow Membership are announced at the ASEE Annual Meeting, at which time Fellow certificates and pins are presented in an appropriate ceremony. Advance information on Fellow Membership selection is made available, as early as possible, to nominees who are selected and to their nominators.

List of ASEE Fellows

The ASEE bylaws limit the number of members who can be advanced to Fellow Member in any one year to a total equal to one-tenth of one percent of the ASEE individual membership. The Fellow Member Committee, appointed by the ASEE President, has the responsibility for evaluating all nominations submitted and recommending a limited number of candidates to the Awards Policy Committee.  Strict adherence to prescribed procedures is essential to assure equitable action on these nominations.  The Fellow Member Committee has prepared these guidelines to assist nominators in preparing nominations following standard procedures.

The Fellow Member Committee depends on the nominator to furnish all the necessary information requested in the nomination packet. The nominator must select widely distributed references with no more than two from any single institution or community.  A "Reference" cannot be a current member of the Board of Directors, members of the Fellow Member Committee, Awards Policy Committee, Headquarters staff, or the nominator.  Information on all the nomination forms must be complete, specific, and unambiguous because the Fellow Member Committee must determine the candidate's qualifications from the documentation submitted.

Completed reference forms are required from at least five current members of ASEE, with at least three of these references being Fellows of ASEE. You may view a list of ASEE Fellow Members here.  No more than two letters of support may come from individuals at the same institution. No current members of the Board of Directors, the Fellow Member Committee, the Awards Policy Committee, the Headquarters staff (on the date of submission of the reference form), or the nominator shall act as a reference. Although five references are required, a safety margin of at least two more is recommended to not jeopardize the nomination's completeness by the deadline.

The selection of references is most important. To qualify as a reference, an individual should be personally acquainted with the candidate's work and comment incisively. Glowing generalities carry little weight and are discouraged. Where exceptional contributions are cited, corresponding references should be selected to support each area of achievement.

The nominator must submit the complete nomination via email to fellows@asee.org, excluding reference letters, which must be sent by each reference directly to fellows@asee.org.

The nominator must use the nomination form, and people invited to submit letters of recommendation must use the reference form.
