Program Highlights

3rd Global Student Forum on Engineering Education Sponsored by Autodesk, Dassault Systemes, and IBM

Our flagship event is the Global Student Forum (GSF) — at its core a gathering of enthusiastic students keen on making a change in engineering education — but there are a number of events for students that precede and follow the forum itself. The week's events include the following GSF highlights.

  • Community Service Day: We will give back to the local host community by spending half a day restoring local wetlands.
  • Teambuilding: We will get to know our international student colleagues with a fun half-day teambuilding event that will also allow us to explore the exciting conference location -- Cape Town, South Africa.
  • Guided discussions and formation of action plans: 1.5 days will be devoted to in-depth discussions with peers from around the world.
  • Networking Evening: Wednesday evening sets apart time for students to mingle and form important connections with leaders in industry, academia, and government who will benefit from interaction with our student leaders.
  • Social Events: To add to the fun and excitement of the week, social events are planned for the duration of the GSF that will allow participants time to kick back and enjoy the company of their new colleagues.
  • SPEED meeting:As a blossoming international organization, SPEED welcomes enthusiastic new members and their ideas. We will have an official meeting for the group in order to conduct business and introduce new membership.

2nd IFEES Global Summit on Engineeringe Education

This week in Cape Town is a very important one for engineering education, as a host of events will take place with which we will collaborate. The first of these is theIFEES Global Engineering Education Summit:

  • World Bank Institute (WBI) Workshop: The World Bank Institute will hold a special workshop on Sunday afternoon on the Knowledge Economy and Engineering Education.
  • Student participation: 5-10 interested students (to be invited), representing student organizations, from our talented group of around 100 GSF participants will represent the student voice at the IFEES Summit. They will participate in the 1.5 days of sessions with this event in place of participating in the 1.5 days of the official Global Student Forum.
  • General Assembly: Our student representatives (to be invited) will take part in the IFEES General Assembly, and SPEED will apply for the first time for IFEES membership.
  • Representatives in the GSF: Those IFEES Summit participants (representatives of academia, industry and global institutions) who do not take part in the WBI workshop will be involved in GSF activities instead.

7th ASEE Global Colloquium on Engineering Education Presented by Autodesk

The 7th Annual ASEE Global Colloquium on Engineering Education - Presented By Autodesk features:

  • Conference sessions: Three groups of sessions--on the practice, research, and quality assurance of engineering education--include eminent speakers from around the world.
  • Dinner events: Formal dinner events will showcase keynote speeches from experts in the field and will provide an opportunity for student to reconnect with each other and more informally with the presenters from the colloquium.
  • Local events: Township tours offer another perspective of the conference locale.
  • Workshops: A series of 3-hour workshops will be held Monday morning, Monday afternoon, and Wednesday afternoon, and student participation will be coordinated in these events.

ESW WORKSHOP

Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) Workshop

  • Workshop: On Monday, the Engineers for a Sustainable World will hold two workshop sessions. In the morning, selected students may present outcomes from the first day of GSF discussions, and in the afternoon, all GSF participants will participate in the ESW session.
  • Students: Students affiliated with the ESW will also participate in the larger GSF activities.
